Types of Dental Bridges
Traditional Dental Bridges
This is the most common type of dental bridge. It consists of a false tooth (or teeth) held in place by dental crowns that we cement onto each abutment tooth. Traditional bridges are made of porcelain fused with metal or ceramics.
Cantilever Dental Bridges
Cantilever bridges can be used when an adjacent tooth is on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. This type of bridge is less common and is generally used in areas of the mouth that experience less stress, like the front teeth.
Maryland Dental Bridges
Also known as resin-bonded bridges, Maryland bridges are made of a false tooth bonded to metal or porcelain “wings” that we can cement onto the backs of adjacent teeth. We often use these for missing front teeth.
Implant-Supported Dental Bridges
As the name suggests, dental implants rather than crowns or frameworks support these bridges. We often use an implant-supported bridge when more than one tooth is missing. Unlike other types of bridges, implants provide solid and lasting support.
The Dental Bridge Procedure
Initial Consultation
The first step involves an initial consultation where our skilled dental team will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment plan.
Preparation
We prepare the abutment teeth by removing a portion of enamel to make room for a crown. We then take impressions of the teeth, which are sent to a lab to create the bridge, pontic, and crowns.
Temporary Bridge
We can place a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth and gums while we create your permanent bridge.
Placement of Permanent Bridge
Once the permanent bridge is ready, we’ll remove the temporary bridge and fit the new bridge, check it for a proper fit, and then permanently cement it in place.
Follow-Up
We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the bridge is adequately settled and functioning well, and we can make any necessary adjustments.
Aftercare for Dental Bridges
Maintain Oral Hygiene:
Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss daily. We recommend special floss threaders designed to clean underneath and around the bridge.
Regular Dental Check-Ups:
To maintain your dental and oral health, schedule regular cleanings and exams at Fresh Coast Family Dental.
Avoid Hard Foods:
While dental bridges are durable, it is a good idea to avoid extremely hard or sticky foods that could damage them.
Healthy Diet:
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports oral health and well-being.
